5 Easy Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

I have to admit, I've never really celebrated Earth Day. Now don't judge too hard, I do recycle everything I can, use fabric grocery bags, and try to reduce as much plastic use as I can. However, Earth Day can be a great reminder of how we can all do more.

Earth Day was conceived by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 as a way to demonstrate support for protecting the environment. It's celebrated throughout the world each year on April 22. There are literally hundreds of ways to celebrate Earth Day. But here are 5 that are so easy, anyone can do.

1. Go Vegan - If Only For A Day

If you're not already vegan, make a commitment for at least one day, or maybe a week, or maybe one day a week to cut out all animal products. It's not as hard as you think. Especially with all the new meat substitutes on the market. Going vegan helps prevent deforestation, soil degradation, conserves water, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and so many more benefits for the environment. Learn more at The Human League.

2. Use Less Hot Water

There are two easy ways to reduce your hot water usage - wash clothes in cold water and take cooler and shorter showers. Tide has recently started a campaign to wash more in cold water in an effort to help the environment. Today's laundry products are better than ever so hot water isn't necessary. And hot showers are not only bad for the environment but also for your skin by stripping it of natural oils. Cut hot water use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Replace 1 Plastic Item with a Reusable or Compostable

There are so many options here - reusable water bottle, bamboo toothbrush, silicone lid covers (to replace saran wrap), bar soap instead of body wash, reusable grocery bag. These are just a few suggestions. See our past post on how to reduce plastic use for more great ideas.

4. Pick Up Trash

There's unfortunately no lack of trash along our streets and sidewalks. You can probably find enough around your own neighborhood or local park to fill a trash bag. Get some friends to help and make it a fun outing.

5. Walk, Bike or Stay Home

When was the last time you rode your bike? Each time I ride mine, I'm reminded of how much fun it is and how it makes me feel like a kid again. Make a commitment to either walk, bike or just stay home to reduce air pollution. If not possible, map out your errands to minimize your mileage. It's estimated that each gallon of gas is responsible for 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases.

Just like a beautiful flower, we need clean air, clean water and rich soil to thrive. Help create a nourishing environment so we all can flourish.
