Flourish My Dear

Explore and Experience

We arrived after dark to our hotel in Belize and apparently awoke some howler monkeys on the way. We all stopped in our tracks. It was an eerie sound. One I’m sure I’d heard before in a horror movie. It was a new, although slightly scary experience for me and I realized I was far from my Missouri roots.

I had barely left the state I was born in until I was in my twenties. Now I’ve been to over a dozen countries and 20+ states. I’ve gained so much knowledge and confidence by traveling. It’s one thing to hear about places on the news but totally different to experience them up close.

It’s hard to truly appreciate how good we have it in the US until you travel elsewhere. My first trip to England made me realize how good my life is. Even though the British standard of living was high, there were many conveniences they lacked. We’re spoiled - rotten. Living in the Dominican Republic further opened my eyes to how others live. This experience gave me more compassion and understanding for others who aren’t so fortunate.Seeing totally new surroundings can spark your creative side. Listening to the howler monkeys inspired this post along with several short stories. And seeing the beauty of Belize inspired some amazing photographs.

When you travel, mingle with the locals. Eat with them and ask about their lives (everyone loves to talk about themself!) My first impression of Belize was how poor the country was. In talking to our guides, they confirmed, yes, they were poor, but they were also happy. They loved their work and appreciated the beauty of their country.

If you haven’t traveled much, GO, now! Even if you don’t have much money, you can travel on a budget. There are many wonderful places right here in the US to visit for little cash (camping anyone?).

I miss lying in the hammock in Belize, listening to the howler monkeys. But new adventures await. Go adventure and flourish.
