Flourish My Dear

Own Your Decisions

Notepaper with Decisions listed on it

We’re all faced with tough decisions in life. From what career to choose, where to live, what job to take, who to marry and so forth. Some decisions need to be weighed carefully as they can change the trajectory of your life.

So how do you make big decisions? There are a number of approaches and none of them necessarily wrong. You could ask your friends for advice. Your parents will probably give you advice whether you want it or not. You could be like my analytical husband and do a pro and con spreadsheet. Or even just flip a coin. Whatever method you use, you need to own it.

Around my late 30’s I realized I was blaming others for some of the decisions I had made early in my life – which was not quite going in the direction I had hoped. It’s so easy to blame others. Had I taken ownership of my choices, instead of putting responsibility on someone else, it would have been easier to course correct.

Now when faced with a tough decision, I make it without input from others. For me, I find I’m too much influenced by others advice, clouding my decisions. So I don’t discuss it with anyone. Now this approach may be too extreme for you. But however you decide, make sure it’s ultimately YOUR choice.

Some of your decisions will be better than others. But more than likely, if you listen to your heart and soul, your decisions will be better than those you let others make for you.

So regardless of how you make decisions, own it! Don’t blame others for the choices that you make. It sounds like common sense, but you may not even realize you do it (like I did). Owning your decisions puts you in control and empowers you to flourish and live your best life.
