5 Reasons You Need House Plants

Multiple pots of various houseplants

I’m always amazed at the number of people who are afraid to have live plants. They’re concerned about killing them or they think plants are too messy. However, the benefits far outweigh those concerns. Here are 5 reasons you need house plants.

1. Better Air

Studies have shown that plants help purify the air. They can even remove formaldehyde (a cancer causing gas) which is found in some wood furniture products and fabrics. Office buildings have even experimented with banks of plants to purify the air in buildings. Plants also produce humidity which improves air quality. And of course, as we learned in elementary, plants give off oxygen which we all need.

2. Improved Health

Plants improve your health in so many ways. They reduce stress, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety and even relieve allergies. Plants have a calming effect on us which helps us relax. And by cleaning the air, plants can help reduce allergy symptoms.

3. Mood Boost

Being around plants just makes us feel better. You know that relaxed, stress free feeling you get when you walk through a garden or forest? Well indoor plants have the same effect on us. And you don’t need a whole forest to achieve it. Even one plant can have a positive effect.

4. A Natural Element

When I design a room, I always add a natural element. It makes the room cozy, warm and welcoming. And while there are a lot of accessories that can meet this requirement, live plants are the number one choice.

5. Personal Satisfaction

Taking care of a living thing, watching it grow and thrive brings a lot of personal satisfaction. You’ll need to interact with your plants to see if they need more or less water and sunlight, or maybe some additional soil. Of course if it doesn’t survive, don’t worry. I’ve certainly had my share of casualties. Just try again. Eventually you’ll figure out what the plant needs.

Some easy to grow plants include Pothos, Snake Plant, Spider Plant and the Peace Lily. Pothos is the easiest and my favorite as they are quite hardy. Learn more about which plants are easy to grow.

Now add some plants to your home so you both can flourish.
